Common Nighthawk Wind Guidelines and Monitoring

Project Term:

2017 - 2018

NH Audubon has been monitoring breeding Common Nighthawk in New Hampshire since 2007, most intensively in the Concord, NH area. During that time, volunteers have gathered data on the occurrence of Common Nighthawk nests, nest success and nesting behavior. In the Concord area the population has declined from a high of 14 adults to 6 in 2018. NH Audubon has created a profile of the birds’ behavior at an active nest site versus sites with only a displaying male but no female or nest. This has been critical in responding to collision issues with wind turbines.
